Preparation and Usage Starting Skills

Project Steps

  1. This design was etched in stages. The technique allows the use of a particular stencil image multiple times on the same project when you don't have enough to etch all simultaneously. Additionally, it enables stencil images to be placed in closer proximity than the stencil borders would otherwise permit.
  2. This design also used a masking technique which allows for the selective use of certain parts of a stencil in specific locations.
  3. Turn the bowl upside down. Place a flower stencil in the middle of the bottom of the bowl. Follow the etching cream instructions to etch it onto the bowl. Place the star circle frame around the flower. Cover the inner circle securely with masking tape. Use the etching cream, as before, to etch the stars around the flower.
  4. Turn the bowl over. With a ruler, make 8 equidistant marks around the top edge. Make a corresponding mark at the bottom of the bowl next to the star circle. Draw a curved line along the inside of the bowl from one top mark to a bottom mark that is two marks to the left or right at the bottom. Repeat this all the way around on the inside of the bowl.
  5. Turn the bowl over. Beginning at the top edge of the bowl that is now face down, lay the border stencils over the lines as far as they will go. Cover all exposed areas securely with masking tape. Use the etching cream, as before, to etch the designs onto the glass.
  6. Continue any unfinished lines by laying the border stencils and etching, one at the time, over the remaining line. Cover any extra stencil securely with masking tape. Repeat until all lines are completed.
